The Role of Curiosity in Global Managers’ Decision- Making

 

When we concern about the organization success, ‘Decision Making’ take place a significant role within the organizational context. Especially managers need to be outfitted with the ability in making appropriate decision. Unfortunately it is said that the global managers lack the effective decision making skills due to the unawareness of the dynamic changes in the environment. They lack the ability to measure the changing rate and the influence of the change to the organization. It is argued that ‘Curiosity’ will provide a strong foundation to overcome this situation.

 First of all you need to understand the relationship between the curiosity and the decision making. To take a better idea about this relationship it is important to analyze the sequence arguments which were appeared in the research paper. It says that curiosity prompt in learning and also it makes easy in making better decision. Research paper provides a diagrammatical view of the key component of curiosity. They are mindfulness, divisive, specific learning, general learning and fact learning and intuition which lead to increase the knowledge. This will intern increase the curiosity by completing the cycle.

The curiosity typically divided into two main sub categories, which are perceptual curiosity and epistemic curiosity. Perceptual curiosity is increased perception or reaction to visual, acoustic and tactile simulations, where the epistemic curiosity is motivation and desire to know and learn. In addition, there are biological and social dimension for the curiosity. Biological dimensions are almost hard wired in the three basic drivers. Those are self preservation, greed and sex. Social dimensions are tied up with the personality traits.

The curiosity would be viewed as primary element of learning, where the second one reflects on basic derivers of curiosity. Curiosity can be achieved by perceives gaps of global managers.

Diversive and specific are the next two components of the curiosity. These are behavioral search aspects. For global managers it is free to select their own patterns of searching the knowledge. If they select the specific exploration they have to concern with a specific topic which they lack knowledge. On the other hand diverse exploration is the alternative knowledge which he/she already familiar.

Therefore in conclusion it could be said those are the most important components in making effective decisions among the global scale.

  2. Agreed. Yes, the curiosity could be viewed as a primary element in learning. Besides, in decision making in some international organization such as the United Nations (UN), principal decision-making bodies are consist of several if not many managers and prone to deadlock and are known for their failures to deliver in time. Other international agencies such as the European Union (EU), strive to produce decisions - through the managers - in time. This is mainly due to the time taken (which may indicate the insufficient capacity of managers at times) to decide by which the scenario (in relation to the decision) has already changed as the environment is in flux.
